Residential fencing questions, answered.

Start with the practical details—boundaries, access, materials, permits, gate movement and how the finished work needs to function.

What information should I send for a fencing quote?

Send the property suburb, approximate length and height, preferred material, clear photos, access notes, demolition needs and any gate or retaining-wall requirements. A plan or survey is useful where boundaries or levels are uncertain.

Which areas does RJL Fencing and Gates service from its Thomastown headquarters?

RJL Fencing and Gates has its headquarters at Unit 1 / 12 Merchant Avenue, Thomastown VIC 3074 and provides residential fencing, custom gates, gate automation, pool barriers and retaining-wall installations across Melbourne’s north, north-east and north-west. Core service suburbs include Bundoora, Mill Park, Epping, South Morang, Greensborough, Strathmore and Essendon, with surrounding Moonee Valley suburbs also covered. Quote and installation availability depends on the project, site access and scheduling.

Do you build both timber and Colorbond fences?

Yes. RJL builds timber paling, capped and feature fences as well as Colorbond boundary fencing. The team can compare privacy, maintenance, appearance, levels and neighbour considerations for the site.

Can RJL make and automate a custom driveway gate?

Yes. Sliding and swing gates can be designed, fabricated, installed and automated as one coordinated package, with remotes, safety devices, keypads, intercoms and selected smart-access options.

Does RJL install sliding and double gates in Bundoora?

Yes. RJL designs and fabricates sliding driveway gates, double swing gates and matching pedestrian gates around the opening, runback, slope, wind and required access.

Does RJL install glass pool fencing?

Yes. Frameless glass and other pool-barrier systems can be assessed around the pool layout, gate position, sightlines, surfaces and property-specific compliance requirements.

Who confirms the legal property boundary?

The owner is responsible for confirming the boundary. Where pegs are missing or the line is disputed, use a licensed land surveyor before work begins. RJL does not determine title boundaries.

What should I do if my neighbour refuses to split the cost of a new boundary fence in Victoria?

Under Victoria’s Fences Act 1968, adjoining owners generally share the cost of a sufficient dividing fence. A higher-standard fence or damage caused by one owner can change the contribution. Start with a clear RJL quote and try to agree in writing. If needed, serve a Fencing Notice and allow the neighbour 30 days to respond. Follow the applicable notice and dispute process before non-urgent work starts; do not assume automatic repayment.

Do I need my neighbour’s agreement before replacing a boundary fence?

Get agreement in writing on the line, material, height, cost, access and removal before work starts. If you do not agree, follow the Victorian Fencing Notice process. If the boundary is disputed, use a licensed surveyor.

Does a fence or retaining wall need a permit?

It depends on height, location, boundary position, easements, nearby structures, loads and local planning controls. Confirm the specific property requirements with council and a registered building surveyor before work starts.

Can RJL certify a pool fence?

RJL installs and upgrades pool barriers. Formal inspection and certification must be completed by an appropriately registered building surveyor, building inspector or authorised pool safety inspector. The applicable standard can depend on when the pool was installed.

Does a residential metal pool safety fence require electrical bonding?

Conductive fences, gates, spigots and other fixed metal near a pool may require equipotential bonding under AS/NZS 3000. The 1.25 m zone from the pool water edge is an important assessment consideration, but the complete installation and applicable Wiring Rules determine the requirement. Involve a licensed electrician before posts, spigots or concrete are installed. The electrician must assess, complete, test and certify any required bonding work.

Is a sliding driveway gate or a double swing gate better for a Melbourne home?

The right option depends on your driveway layout. A sliding gate needs side runback for the opening width plus allowance for overlap, hardware and the gate tail; cantilever gates need additional support space. Double swing gates need a clear opening arc and allowance for driveway slope and wind. RJL measures the opening, ground levels and clearances before recommending the gate and automation system.

What are the current pool fencing compliance rules for homeowners in Victoria?

Residential pools and spas capable of holding more than 300 mm of water must be registered with the local council and have a compliant safety barrier. The applicable standard depends on the pool’s construction date and council records. Common checks include barrier height, ground gaps, non-climbable zones and gates that open away from the pool and self-close and self-latch. A registered inspector must assess the barrier, generally every four years, and the owner must lodge the certificate with council.

How long will installation take?

Timing depends on demolition, length, levels, fabrication, approvals, access, weather and material availability. RJL confirms the expected sequence for the accepted scope and communicates material changes as the project progresses.
